Description

Barningham House is a former rectory built in the early 19th century, featuring an older core. The building is constructed of white brick with fragments of timber framing and has slate roofs that are two-span and hipped in parts. It stands two storeys tall with attics and has a complex T-shaped form. Various internal chimney stacks have plain shafts. The façade includes a range of four small-paned sash windows set in deep reveals with gauged heads. There are also four dormers with rounded roofs covered in lead.

The entrance is located under a Tuscan portico at the angle between the main range and the south wing. The door consists of two three-panelled leaves, partly glazed, and is topped by a semi-circular traceried fanlight. A plain mutule cornice runs along the top. The long south wing is partly faced with brick over timber framing and features 18th-century elements, including an ornate paired wooden modillion cornice, a string course, and three full-height pilasters with Ionic capitals positioned between the windows on the south face.

At the west end of the wing, there is a single-storey semi-circular bay added, which has a flat roof and three small-paned sash windows that extend to ground level. The north end of the house retains some old casement windows with square-leaded panes. Inside, there are remnants of a smaller timber-framed house at the rear of the main range, while the south wing showcases mid-18th-century features such as panelled shutters and six-panelled doors adorned with egg-and-dart ornament.
