Description

Southgate House is a house that has been divided into flats, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, with a possible earlier core. It is constructed of red brick, featuring blue headers on the east and west gables at the ground and first storeys. The roof is a tiled half-hipped mansard style with a modillion eaves cornice.

The building has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a five-window range that includes small-paned sashes in flush cased frames. There are three flat-headed dormers, each with small-paned sash windows. The central entrance features a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight that has geometric glazing-bars, framed by a doorcase with a moulded architrave and a cornice hood supported by moulded console brackets.

At the rear, there is a two-storey 19th-century block in red brick, which has a raised band between the storeys and a plaintiled roof, featuring segmental-arched large-paned sash windows. In the south-west corner of the rear, there is a small two-storey section made of flint and red brick with a steeply-pitched roof that integrates with the main roof. This section contains an early 18th-century 18-pane sash window and appears to be the oldest part of the house.

Inside, the ground storey windows have panelled internal shutters. A restored early 19th-century staircase rises the full height of the house, featuring stick balusters and a ramped and wreathed handrail.
