Description
The gateway and walling to Number 13 The Fort, located on Sickle Smere Road, is a significant architectural feature built in 1803 by George Byfield. This structure, which was formerly the facade of a gaol, is designed in a style reminiscent of George Dance's work for Newgate. It is constructed in stucco that simulates masonry.
The design includes a central entrance pavilion that is pedimented and features simulated coursed rusticated masonry and vermiculated quoins. This pavilion projects slightly forward and is topped with a heavy blocking course above a cornice band with a bedmould. On either side of the pavilion are 4-bay wings that also have a heavy blocking course and cornice band with a bedmould.
The entrance is marked by massive doors with a heavily barred lunette above, set within a deeply-splayed semicircular arch that has rustications. Additionally, there are end pavilions with simulated coursed rusticated masonry that also project slightly forward, each containing a heavily barred semicircular lunette in an arched recess.
