Description
5 and 6 Southgate Green are a pair of houses dating from the early 19th century, with later additions. The buildings are constructed of white brick with slate roofs, while the north end wall features random flint, red brick, and stone blocks. They are situated on the site of the medieval Hospital of St Petronilla.
The exterior has three storeys and a four-window range, with 12-pane sash windows on the first storey and 6-pane sash windows on the second, all set in cased frames with plain reveals. On the ground storey, No.5 has a single 12-pane sash window, while No.6 features a later 19th-century bay window with a flat lead-covered roof, a moulded cornice, and three small-paned sash windows. The entrance doors have fanlights and plain semicircular arched brick surrounds, with large early Victorian Corinthian porticoes added: No.5 has fluted columns with acanthus leaf decoration on the capitals, while No.6 has plain capitals. Additionally, No.6 includes a large late Victorian extension at the rear.
Inside, No.5 has been extensively modernised due to its conversion into flats. In contrast, No.6 retains many early 19th-century features, including a distinctive staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, as well as an ornate plaster cornice in the entrance hall. The original rear wall, before the later extension, is very thick and has another thick wall extending westwards from it with a wide semicircular arch. Both walls are rendered and appear to be made of flint or stone, possibly remnants of the church from St Petronilla's Hospital, which was the only surviving stone building on the site according to an illustration from 1781.
