Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8663SW SOUTHGATE STREET 639-1/12/570 (West side) 07/08/52 No.84 and attached railings

GV II

House. C18, probably with older core. Red brick with a hipped tiled roof and modillion eaves cornice. A high plinth across the front of the house stops short of the north end and there are indications of a join in the brickwork. The north gable wall has bands of stretcher bond in a darker red brick. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attics and cellars. The windows to both storeys are all 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames, more widely spaced on the left of the entry. 3 flat-headed dormers with 2-light small-paned casement windows in the front slope of the roof. A central 6-panel door with the top 2 panels glazed has a wood doorcase with panelled pilasters and reveals and a fret dentilled frieze and pediment. Near the north end of the rear wall is a section of flint and stone blocks which does not seem to relate to anything now in the house. An early C19 2-storey red brick rear range is separately roofed parallel with the front. Attached to the north-east corner of the front is a section of cast-iron garden railings, with fleur-de-lys heads, on a low brick plinth. INTERIOR: flint and brick-lined cellar has 2 niches with reset arched heads with moulded spandrels which may come from the former Chapel of St Saviour nearby. Georgian fittings in most rooms of the house: drawing room to the right of the entrance, fully panelled, with a fret cornice; C18 fireplace surround with fluted architrave and ornate central motif. At the north end of the room a small extension containing a long sash window with internal panelled shutters is marked by a boxed-in ceiling beam and fluted Ionic pilasters. To the left of the entrance, a fireplace with bolection-moulded surround and dentil cornice. Late C18/early C19 stair with closed strings, turned balusters and plain ramped handrail. Boarded attics. The rear range has a panelled ground storey room.
