Description
Number 2 is a house located on Sparhawk Street in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the late 18th century and mid-19th century. The front is made of red brick with rusticated brick quoins, while the rear is rendered and gabled, topped with a slate roof.
The house has two storeys, a cellar, and attics, featuring a three-window range. Two of the windows are sashes with a single vertical bar, set in heavy cased frames with shallow reveals and projecting sills; the central window is blocked. The right-hand window has been raised and features a small gabled roof above it. A stucco band runs above the ground-storey windows, which are adorned with flat stucco arches. There is a lead-covered flat-headed dormer that includes a sash window with single vertical glazing bars.
The central door is recessed and has six sunk panels, with the top two being glazed. The doorcase is heavily rusticated, featuring a raised vermiculated keystone and plain reveals. Attached to the north-east corner of the house is a very high garden wall, constructed with a mix of stone blocks and Tudor brick.
Inside, the interior is mainly Victorian, showcasing a series of cast-iron fireplaces designed in a Georgian style.
