Description

This is a house located at 1 Sparhawk Street in Bury St Edmunds. It has an early 17th-century core and was extended to the south in the 18th century. The front of the house dates from the late 18th century, and there is a late 20th-century extension at the north end that matches the original style. The house is timber-framed and faced in red brick, with a plastered rear that shows traces of comb pargetting. The middle rail of the frame and several widely spaced studs are exposed, displaying signs of weathering. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The exterior features two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a two-and-a-half bay layout. There are three windows: on the first storey, there are 16-pane sashes in flush cased frames with wide flat gauged arches, and on the ground storey, the windows have catches for former external shutters on each side. A stucco band runs above the ground-storey windows, indicating a difference in the date and type of brickwork; the ground-storey is made of Tudor brick laid in a random bond, while the upper section uses later bricks in a regular bond. There are two flat-headed lead-covered dormers with 2-light small-paned casement windows. The central entrance features a 6-panelled door in a plain wood doorcase with a cornice, and there is an internal chimney stack with a plain rectangular red brick shaft.

Inside, the house has a basic jettied two-cell plan with an internal chimney stack and a lobby entrance. The chimney stack was tunnelled through in the 18th century to create a passage, which is now blocked. The main beams have ovolo-moulding, and the single-bay extension on the south is marked by a slight change in the level of the brick front.
