Description
This is a house located at 10 Sparhawk Street in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the 16th century. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast and a 20th-century plaintiled roof. The building has a jettied front and consists of three bays, with an additional bay at the north end where the roof, originally hipped, is at a lower level.
The house is two storeys high and has a cellar. It has three windows, all of which are sash windows with plate glass set in flush cased frames. The entrance features a four-panel door that is accessed by steps, with the top two panels being glazed and a wood surround with plain reveals. At the rear, there is a gabled wing.
Inside, the main beams on the ground floor are exposed and feature chamfers with curved stops. The room to the right of the entrance, originally consisting of two bays extending into the rear gable, has a central beam supported by small solid brackets. The end wall on the north side was completely removed when the extension was added. The roof retains its original rafters, including those from the hip, although many later timbers have been introduced.
