Description

38 and 38A Southgate Street is a house that has been divided into two properties. It dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The building features a timber frame that is either plastered or pebble-dashed, topped with a Pantile roof. The rear wing has some 20th-century tiles on the north side and a small section of slates at the far end. The layout follows a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with a wing extending to the rear on the left side.

The exterior stands two storeys tall, with an attic at the back. The front facade has a three-window arrangement, featuring 20th-century casements that are three-light, with a single light positioned above the door on the center right. On the ground floor, there are two 2/2 sash windows on the left and center, and a 19th-century shop window on the far right. A large chimney stack is located at the right ridge, accompanied by linked diagonal flues. The rear has two additional stacks, one of which has twin ornamental flues, while the gable ends are mostly blank. The rear side includes various casements and small lean-to extensions. The rear wing has three 2-light cross casements on the first floor above other casements and a door, along with two dormers, one of which rises from the eaves. An extension on the right end features a casement on each floor and a door.

This property is significant as it retains its original 17th-century timber-framed structure, along with the three-unit lobby-entry plan and an early long rear wing that includes three old 2-light cross casements on the first floor. The main form of the house remains intact, along with at least two substantial chimney stacks that have linked ornamental flues.
