Description

The remains of a cross are located in the garden to the west of the Evergreen Oak. This cross dates from the early 16th century and consists of several blocks of ashlar that form the base and a small part of the shaft. It was established according to the will of John Cole in 1527, which specified the creation of a new cross modeled after Trappetes' Cross at Hawelanesende. The will instructed that the cross be placed at the end of Short Groves, where the Gospel is read on Ascension Eve, and allocated 10 shillings for its construction. The original location of Trappetes' Cross has not been identified.
