Description
Number 23 and Number 24, known as Little Cleves Cottage, is a house that has been divided into two separate dwellings. It dates from the 16th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is one-and-a-half storeys tall and follows a basic three-cell plan, with extensions added over time. It features a timber-framed structure that has been encased in red brick from the mid-19th century, and the original thatch roof has been replaced with concrete pantiles in the mid-20th century.
An internal chimney stack is located between the two halves of the building, showcasing three high red brick sawtooth shafts. Below the shafts, there is a recessed plastered panel with two rounded arches. The cottage has various two-light late 19th-century small-paned casement windows, with mid-20th-century replacements found in Number 23. There are also two gabled dormers.
Inside, Number 23 is said to have all its timbers concealed, while Number 24 retains exposed framing and ceilings. Each half contains two rooms per storey, with the former outer wall of Number 24 showing blocked windows and grooves for lathing for external plaster. A timber-framed lean-to at the rear houses the staircase. A main ceiling beam near the front of the chimney stack indicates that the stack may have been added later.
