Description
Briar Cottage and Shepherd's Close is a house that was formerly divided into three units and is now divided into two. It likely dates from the mid 17th century but incorporates some older timbers. The building has one-and-a-half storeys and a basic three-cell plan. It is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. There is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The windows are 18th-century casements, with three-light and two-light designs featuring cast iron frames, pintle hinges, and square-leaded panes. There is also one eyebrow dormer with a 20th-century diamond-leaded two-light casement window. The building has two plank doors.
Inside No. 25, the timbers are exposed, showing evidence of alterations and later partitioning. Some timbers have external weathering, and there is a plain clasped side purlin roof without principal rafters, featuring several reused smoke-blackened timbers from a medieval house. No. 27, located to the west of the stack, has a notable carved and moulded late 15th-century ceiling beam in front of the chimney stack, which has been shortened and appears to have originated from an important local building.
