Description
The Cottage is a house that dates from the early 17th century and was altered in the mid-19th century. It has two storeys and consists of two linked sections: one is timber-framed and rendered with a hipped, pantiled roof, while the other is made of flint and red brick with a lean-to slate roof. The building is positioned sideways to the road.
The older southern range, which is timber-framed, features an internal chimney stack made of small red Tudor bricks with a plain shaft. There is a wide canted bay window on the ground floor of the gable end, and above it are small-paned sash windows. The timber frame is divided into four bays and does not have a chimney bay, suggesting that the stack may have been added later.
An original studded partition that was removed from near the south wall in the eastern bay indicates that part of the house once extended further south in a wing. The studding is substantial and includes near-straight arched braces similar to those found in a nearby property, No. 12. Additionally, a small section of a truss between the second and third bays appears to be a remnant of an older frame, with the rafters covered.
