Description
The Riverside Hotel, originally a house, dates from the mid-18th century with later alterations from the 19th century and around 1900. This three-storey building with attics features five windows and is constructed of red brick, with the original work showcasing fine white pointing. It has a set-forward plinth topped with moulded limestone coping. The hipped roof is slated, with end chimneys made of red brick and dormers that contain sash windows. The sash windows are adorned with flat arches of gauged brick and moulded limestone cills, while the 19th-century windows have small panes. The entrance door, added in the 20th century, is a glazed six-panel design with a sidelight. Inside, there is a fine staircase from around 1750, featuring carved console brackets and three barley-sugar twist balusters on each tread, a moulded handrail, a dado with fielded panels, and Corinthian pilasters. A second floor was added in red brick around 1900. Before it became a hotel in the mid-20th century, the building was known as The Hall.
