Description

Cullum House and the Old Primary School, along with an adjacent outbuilding, is a building complex dating from 1847. The structure is arranged in a Y-plan, with the schoolroom forming the long arm of the layout. It is primarily one storey high, with some parts having one and a half storeys and attics. The exterior is constructed of flint rubble with red brick quoins and features Flemish parapet gables. The roofs are covered with fish-scale slates and topped with crested ridge tiles.

The axial chimney is made of red brick and has three circular flues, which are adorned with diaper-carved tiled shafts and a moulded cap and base, along with a plinth featuring a band of diaper-patterned tiles. The windows are hood-moulded, with two-light designs and wrought iron casements that have hexagonal panes. The schoolroom windows are also hood-moulded but feature triple small-pane sliding sashes.

There is a one-storey entrance porch with a Flemish gable, which includes a hood-moulded doorway and a carved limestone plaque above that displays a coat of arms. The entrance doors are battened and boarded.

At the rear, there is an adjacent outbuilding that was formerly the toilet block for the school. This single-storey structure is contemporary with the main building and is also made of flint with red brick dressings, topped with a low-pitch hipped slate roof. It features iron casements with hexagonal panes and has various doorways, along with a central brick stack that has an octagonal flue. This outbuilding forms a cohesive group with Cullum House and the Old Primary School.
