Description
No. 5 The Pound is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It features two windows and has a two-cell plan with one storey and a loft at one end. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a cedar-shingled roof that includes a red brick axial chimney, which was rebuilt in the 20th century. The cottage has 19th and 20th century casement windows and a glazed panelled entrance door, which is sheltered by a flat canopy supported by brackets. The lobby entrance is positioned against the internal chimney, which only heats the hall. This cottage is an unusual survival in Suffolk from a lower social level and retains its open rafters, except for the loft that is accessed by a ladder at one end. It is included for its group value.
