Description
Chapel Cottage is a former farmhouse dating from around 1600. It is one-and-a-half storeys tall with a three-cell plan and consists of four bays. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof, and features an internal chimney stack with a plain white brick shaft. The apex of the north-east gable is infilled with black knapped random flints. There are three small-paned, two-light casement windows and two eyebrow dormers, one of which is a mid-20th century addition. The entrance is through a plank door. The framing is widely spaced, with plain joists set flat. The service end, located to the south-west, is still divided into two sections, but the original partition wall has been removed and replaced with a 20th-century partition set about one foot away. The main beams have chamfers and curved stops, with the beam in the parlour featuring an additional groove. Both main ground-storey rooms have open fireplaces with plain timber lintels. Diagonal pegging in the north-east gable wall suggests that there were originally small projecting windows on both storeys. The upper doorways have jambs made from naturally curved timbers fitted into the tie-beams with dovetail halvings, and those on either side of the stack appear to be original. The roof is supported by side purlins.
