Description
White Hall Cottage is a former farmhouse dating to the late 16th century, likely with origins earlier than that. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered walls, covered by a pantiled roof. The building originally comprised two main sections with a lobby entry arrangement. It has two storeys and an attic. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light casement windows dating from around 1900; there are no windows on the first floor. The doorway features a pedimented architrave and a plank door. A section of the chimney stack was rebuilt in the mid-20th century, and a red brick lean-to has been added to the rear, dating from the 19th century.
Inside, the timber frame consists of three bays, mostly concealed except in the upper right room, where steeply-inclined arched corner braces are visible. In the right-hand section, wallposts are located just above the stack, with blocked mortices found just below the upper floor level. The interior features substantial, plain joists set flat on both floors; a floorbeam in the left-hand section has stop-chamfers. The roof over the right-hand section is a clasped purlin roof, with the rafters concealed.
