Description

Poplar Hall is a house dating from the mid 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure, with the north entrance front encased in mid 19th century red brick and the south side rough-cast. The building has a half-H plan and a deeply recessed two-window main range, topped with plaintiled roofs; both cross-wings are hipped at the north end.

An axial chimney from the 17th century made of red brick has a plinth adorned with a complex series of moulded bands and sunk date panels on two faces. The windows are mainly 18th century transomed casements, with some having been renewed in the 19th and mid 20th centuries. The entrance features an early 18th century six-panelled door, with the lower panels fielded and the upper panels glazed. It is framed by an architrave with a keystone and console brackets, though the cornice has been damaged by the 19th century brick encasement.

Inside, there is a notable mid 17th century staircase with moulded handrails, newel finials, and turned balusters. One room contains two 17th century moulded plaster cartouches in the ceiling. Much of the framing has been exposed in the 20th century, revealing a high incidence of reused timber from 15th and 16th century buildings, including a plain butt-purlin roof. The 18th century remodelling includes some fine internal joinery. Additionally, the boundary with Debenham parish runs through the building.
