Description

Green Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century and around 1600. It has a three-cell plan with two original rear wings and stands two storeys high with attics. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a plaintiled roof. It has an axial chimney made of red brick, with the sawtooth shaft rebuilt around 1900, and a gable chimney on the right side. The windows are mid-19th century sashes with large panes, including sidelights in the parlour and hall cells. The entrance door, also from the mid-19th century, has four panels with the upper panels glazed and is topped by a dentilled and modillioned pediment.

Inside, there are notable original features, such as closely-spaced windbraced close-studding, with the original brick-nogging visible in the attic. The high-quality butt purlin roof is unusual for having three tiers of purlins, with the uppermost tier being windbraced. In one of the rear wings, there is a newel staircase with turned balusters at the top, and a dog-gate with two tiers of closely-spaced turned balusters on the first storey, likely from this staircase. Above the hall, heavy joists display an unusual combination of chamfer and cavetto mouldings. The hall features a large open fireplace, and there are small blocked windows with roll and cavetto mullions, as well as larger 17th-century windows that have also been blocked, complete with transoms. The interior includes repositioned 17th-century wainscoting and several moulded plank doors.
