Description

49 Crown Street is a house located in Bury St Edmunds, with an 18th-century front and an early 19th-century roof-raising, although it has an earlier core. The building is timber-framed and faced in white brick, topped with a plaintiled roof that features a moulded eaves cornice.

The house has three storeys and a cellar, with a five-window range. The ground and first storeys have 12-pane sash windows in flush cased frames, all featuring flat gauged arches. Below the second-storey windows, there is a raised stucco band, while a further stucco band is located between the ground and first storey windows. The northern part of the front is slightly set back from the central entrance door, indicating that two houses may have been combined into one. The recessed entrance door has six raised fielded panels and is topped by a fine fanlight with decorative glazing, framed by a wooden doorcase with panelled reveals, pilasters, and an open pediment. There are also two arched cellar openings within the plinth.

Inside, the timber frame is not exposed as the interior has been entirely updated in the Georgian style. The staircase to the first storey features turned balusters, closed strings, and a wreathed moulded handrail. The windows have internal panelled shutters, and there are six-panelled doors with eared architraves. On the top storey, the balustrade of the stair is designed in a Chinese style. In the northern ground storey room, there is a notable Greek Revival plaster frieze and cornice with circular paterae between the triglyphs. The top storey of the front range is an addition with a 19th-century roof, while a lower rear range at right angles has an 18th-century side-purlin roof.
