Description
1 and 2 Chequer Square are a pair of houses built in 1840, located in Bury St Edmunds. They are joined on the east side with a splayed corner to No. 50 Crown Street. The front of the houses is rendered brick, while the sides and rear are red brick, topped with a slate roof. There is an internal chimney stack with a plain rectangular white brick shaft.
The exterior features three storeys and basements, with a five-window range. The ground and first-storey windows are 12-pane sashes with semicircular arched heads, while the top storey has 9-pane sashes, all set in plain reveals. The first-storey windows are set into arched recesses and have cast-iron balconies in a Neo-Greek style, decorated with palmettes. The doorways also have semicircular arched heads, with two 4-panelled doors that include fanlights with radiating glazing bars. The basement openings below the ground-storey windows are fitted with cast-iron grilles featuring ornate balusters. Historical records from the Minutes of the Paving Commissioners indicate a dispute regarding the balconies that overhung the pavement when the houses were constructed. The interior has not been inspected.
