Description
The Greene King Brewery Building, located on the south-west corner of St Mary's Square in Bury St Edmunds, is a significant structure dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, although it has been encased in mid-19th century brick. The exterior features red brick and a plain tiled roof, while the interior retains timber framing.
This two-storey building is the oldest surviving part of the Greene King Breweries and was originally part of the former Maulkin's maltings. The Westgate Street side has three blocked window openings on the ground floor, which are two-light, slatted, and have segmental-arched heads. The first floor also had three windows that are now bricked up. The St Mary's Square side is constructed in English Bond and is divided into four bays on the upper storey by recessed panels in the brickwork.
Inside, the 16th century section along St Mary's Square consists of four bays with very heavy, closely-set plain joists in the ground floor ceiling. The 17th century section along Westgate Street also has four bays, featuring substantial cambered beams in the ground floor ceiling, with joists set on edge. The trusses include tie beams with long arched braces, and the roof structure has a ridge-piece, one row of clasped and one row of butt purlins, along with remains of windbraces. The queen struts in the trusses are likely a later addition. The floor is paved with large slabs and includes a shallow trough running through it.
