Description
BURY ST EDMUNDS
TL8563NE WESTGATE STREET 639-1/11/683 (North side) Greene King Brewery Building on south-west corner of St Mary's Square
GV II
Outbuildings: part of the Greene King brewery buildings on the corner of Westgate and St Mary's Square. C16 and C17, encased in mid-C19 brick. Red brick and plaintiled roof to exterior; timber-framed interior. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys: the oldest surviving building of the Greene King Breweries, originally part of the former Maulkin's maltings. The Westgate Street frontage has 3 blocked window openings on the ground storey: 2-light, slatted, with segmental-arched heads. The 1st storey also had 3 windows, now bricked up. The St Mary's Square frontage is in English Bond, divided into 4 bays on the upper storey by recessed panels in the brickwork. INTERIOR: the C16 range along St Mary's Square is in 4 bays with very heavy plain closely-set joists to the ground storey ceiling. The C17 range along Westgate Street, also in 4 bays, has very substantial cambered beams to the ground storey ceiling associated with joists set on edge. The trusses have tie beams with long arched braces and the roof has a ridge-piece, one row of clasped and one row of butt purlins and the remains of windbraces. Queen struts to the trusses are probably a later insertion. The floor is paved with large slabs and has a shallow trough running through it.
