Description

No. 4 St Mary's Square is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a front that is roughcast in panels, and has a tiled mansard roof with a moulded parapet and a cornice supported by wood modillions. The building has two storeys, cellars, and attics, with a three-window range of 12-pane sash windows set in flush cased frames. There are two hipped dormers, each with 12-pane sash windows on the lower slope of the roof. The entrance features a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight that has ornate glazing, framed by a doorcase with panelled pilasters and a pedimented hood, which has a fret ornamented soffit supported by cut and moulded brackets. At the rear, there is a porch with a tented lead roof.

Inside, the house contains two 16th-century ranges that run parallel to the street, both of which were raised during the 18th century. A narrow cellar runs the full length of the house, lined with re-used ashlar blocks, some made of sandstone. Below where the two frames meet is a wide low pointed archway, and the rear section features heavy original ceiling joists. Few timbers are exposed within the building. The main beams in both ranges have double roll-mouldings with run-off stops. The stair, which has been relocated, features a ramped handrail and 18th-century turned balusters, along with several other 18th-century fittings. An upper fireplace showcases an ornate cast-iron duck's nest grate with an eared surround. The rear upper room includes a plaster cornice adorned with a four-petalled flower ornament and a small cast-iron balcony. The top storey was added to the front range before the back, and the rear wall of the front range displays remnants of comb pargetting in panels, visible in the small gap between the two frames.
