Description

The Vicarage is a house that later became the vicarage for St Mary's Church on Crown Street. It was built around 1804, as noted in the Rate Books for the first time. The house is likely designed by Francis Sandys, who owned it until at least 1816. It is constructed of red brick and features a shallow-pitched slate roof with a parapet and a moulded brick dentil cornice. There are four gable-end chimney stacks with plain rectangular shafts.

The exterior has three storeys and a cellar, with a three-window range. All windows are tripartite sashes with segmental heads set in shallow reveals, featuring flat gauged arches. The central windows on the ground and first storeys have 12 panes, while those on the second storey have 6 panes. The central doorway includes a plain rectangular fanlight and is sheltered by a heavy projecting Tuscan porch supported by plain columns.

Inside, the cellar was not inspected, but the interior is described as plain. The ground storey rooms have reeded plaster cornices. The principal rear room boasts a fine canted bay window with three full-length sash windows and internal shutters featuring moulded sunk panels. An original fireplace surround includes fluted columns and a series of small ornate medallions across the architrave. The staircase has stick balusters and a ramped and wreathed handrail, with a balustrade along the landing. In the front attic, the room south of the entry has one cross wall rendered and lined to simulate stone. Slight changes in the outer brickwork in this area suggest that this may have originally been an outside wall and that the house was extended later.
