Description
No. 3 St Mary's Square is an 18th-century house with a 15th-century core. It features a timber frame, a red brick front, a rendered gable at the rear, and a slightly mansard tiled roof. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and attics, with a three-window range consisting of 12-pane sashes that are deeper on the ground floor. All windows are set in plain reveals with fine gauged brick arches. There are two flat-headed dormers with two-light single bar casement windows. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars, framed by an architrave with panelled pilasters and a flat cornice hood, all within a semi-circular arched recess matching the brickwork of the windows. At the rear, there is a two-storey gabled wing with a long 19th-century single-storey extension covered by a slate roof.
Inside, the high cellar has chamfered main ceiling beams and walls with deep narrow alcoves. The front range, which appears to be primarily 17th-century, now exhibits Georgian features, including internal panelled window shutters and a staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The rear range, connected to the front by an internal chimney stack, seems to have been joined to an earlier range at the back of No. 2. It has a much altered partition with remnants of heavy studding and an original doorway with a plain four-centred arched head. A short section of ceiling beam features a wide chamfer and curved stops. This range also has a crown-post roof, with the posts embedded in the wall and a braced collar purlin exposed, while the rafters are covered.
