Description
Lavender Barn is a pair of barns located to the south of Johnny's Farmhouse, aligned north-south and dating from the early to mid 16th century. The barns are timber-framed, with parts weatherboarded and plastered, but they are now encased and roofed in corrugated iron sheeting. The northern section was originally built as a house but was converted to a farm building shortly after. It has two storeys and four bays, featuring several diamond-mullioned windows with mullions intact and shutter-slides above. The roof has diminished principals and one row of unstepped butt purlins, with clasped purlins above. The southernmost bay has had its ceiling removed and is now part of the adjoining barn, while the roof over this bay has collapsed and has been removed. The southern barn consists of four bays, lacking a middle rail in the wall-framing, and has arched braces at the corners. The trusses feature long arched braces to the tie-beams. Its roof, which has eight bays that do not match the wall bays, is similar to the adjoining building but includes windbraces in the end bays. Despite the deteriorating exteriors, the interior framing of these barns still qualifies them for listing.
