Description
The Vicarage is a 16th century timber-framed and plastered house located on the west side of High Street in Clare. Originally built as a hall house, it has undergone significant alterations and additions in the 19th century. The building stands two storeys tall, with the older section featuring a jettied upper storey at the front. Most of the windows are mullioned and transomed casements without glazing bars. The north end includes a wing with shallow oriel bays supported by console brackets. A four-panel door is topped by a flat hood on brackets. The roof is tiled and features a large red brick square chimney stack. Inside, there is fine panelling from the late 16th or early 17th century, as well as some 18th-century panelling. The Vicarage is part of a group that includes the wall to the Vicarage, Galloway House, Church Farmhouse, and the Parish Church of SS Peter and Paul.
