Description

This is a disused watermill from the 18th century. The building features a red brick ground storey, with timber framing and weatherboarding above, topped by a slate roof. There are ventilating louvres in the east gable and a former lucam on the west gable. The mill has three floors and retains its main milling machinery, along with much auxiliary machinery, all in good condition.

On the ground floor, there is an internal undershot waterwheel that is 16 feet in diameter, made of cast iron and mounted on an iron shaft. The control mechanisms for the two sluices are intact. A wooden clasp-arm spurwheel meshes with three cast-iron stone nuts that drive the millstones. On the stone floor, there are three pairs of underdriven French burr stones, complete with their furniture. Above the stones, a wooden clasp-arm crown-wheel meshes with three iron gears, which drive layshafts to power the auxiliary machinery. The upright shaft features several carved inscriptions, with the earliest dating back to 1832.

Additionally, there is a Boby grain cleaner that is fed from bins above and an elevator that returns the cleaned grain to the upper floor. On the bin floor, a 25-foot long flour dresser is fed by an Armfield shaker via an elevator. The sack hoist, bins, and other partitions are all in good order.
