3/90 Watermill -

GV II

Disused watermill. C18. Red brick ground storey, timber-framed and weatherboarded above, slate roof. Ventilating louvres in east gable, formerly a lucam on the west gable. 3 floors. Main milling machinery, and much auxilliary machinery, complete and in good condition. On the ground floor: an internal undershop waterwheel, 16ft. in diameter, in cast iron, mounted on an iron shaft. Control mechanisms for the 2 sluices are intact. Wooden clasp-arm spurwheel meshing with 3 cast-iron stone nuts driving the millstones. On the stone floor: 3 pairs of underdriven French burr stones, complete with their furniture. Above the stones on the upright shaft a wooden clasp-arm crown- wheel meshes with 3 iron gears, driving layshafts to power auxillary machinery. Several carved inscriptions on the upright shaft, the earliest noted 1832. A Boby grain cleaner, fed from bins above, and an elevator to return the cleaned grain to the upper floor. On the bin floor: a 25ft long flour dresser, fed by an Armfield shaker via an elevator. The sack hoist, bins and other partitions survive in good order.
