Description

Chestnut Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with an early 17th century rear wing and early 19th century alterations. The building is timber framed, featuring pebbledash render at the front and plaster at the rear. The front slope of the roof is covered with slate, while the rear slope has glazed black pantiles. The farmhouse has two storeys and a three-cell layout, with four irregularly spaced sash windows that have glazing bars. The entrance features a 19th century four-panel door in two leaves, with glazed upper panels, flanked by pilasters and an entablature. There is a mid 20th century glazed lean-to porch. A gable stack on the left has a white brick shaft, and the main stack between the hall and parlour was removed in the mid 20th century. Some of the framing is exposed, showing evidence for diamond-mullioned windows at the service end, with one window still in place. There is part of a four-centre arched cross-entry doorway, and the cross partition at the service end has been removed. The roof features a plain crownpost design, with square crown posts braced to the collar purlin; the crown post in the open truss over the hall chamber is stop-chamfered. The original 16th century rafters were cut in the early 19th century when a shallower-pitch roof was installed. The small rear wing, likely used as a dairy, has intact first floor framing and an altered queen-post roof.
