Description
Cringles is a house with a core dating from the 15th century, featuring later additions and significant alterations. It has a timber frame and plastered exterior, with a colourwashed brick facade and a black pantiled roof. The building is two storeys high and has two windows with two-light casements set under segmental arches. There is a gabled brick porch that contains a panelled door. To the right, there is a small single-storey former shop with a four-light shop window. On the return wall to the right, there is a 19th-century four-panel door and another shop window with six lights. Inside, there is an internal axial stack with a rebuilt shaft. The section to the right of the stack was once an open hall, where some original studding is exposed in the rear wall, along with evidence of a diamond-mullioned hall window. A 16th-century inserted ceiling features a moulded bridging beam and re-used medieval joists, which is an unusual combination. The remainder of the building is later and concealed. Additionally, there is a further wing that extends to the rear. The property is included for its group value.
