Description
Clematis House is a house that was built in two phases, starting with a mid-16th century hall and service end. Around 1600, a parlour cell was added to the left of the stack, creating a three-cell, lobby entrance house. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a pantiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring casement windows, a gabled porch, and an entrance door, all dating from the mid-20th century.
To the right, there is a single-storey former shop addition, likely from the early 20th century. The left gable includes a two-light attic window with some early diamond-leaded glass. Inside, the hall fireplace has a lintel with remnants of embattled carving, and there are chamfered joists in both the hall and parlour. The first floor retains its studding with a blocked diamond-mullioned window and reversed bracing at the service end. In the hall chamber, there is an arch-braced cambered tie beam. The roof over the earlier part features a plain crown-post structure, with the crown post braced only to the collar purlin. The roof over the parlour is mainly of mid-20th century date but was originally constructed with side purlins. The house also has newel stairs.
