Description
The Burrow is a former farmhouse dated 1630, located on Station Road in Laxfield. It features a timber frame with part plastering, colourwashed brick on the ground floor, and brick on both gable ends, with the southern gable dating to the 18th century. The roof is pantiled at the front and plaintiled at the rear. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has an unusual L-shaped plan formed by two short wings, although the west end of the north wing appears to have been lost.
Each wing contains two windows with 18th to 19th century casements. The north wing features a six-panelled raised and fielded door with an open porch supported by timber posts, while the south wing has a four-panel door with a simple open porch. There are two flat-roofed dormers on the south wing. An axial stack is located in the north wing, not quite at the gable end.
Inside, the main room of the north wing has an ovolo-moulded cross-beamed ceiling, with the soffits carved with floral designs, a Tudor rose, and the date. The chamber above also has ovolo-moulded cross beams, with a cartouche featuring the initials 'NF' at the center. Most of the timbers are almost wholly concealed.
