Description

Starhouse Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse built in three distinct stages. A two-cell cross-wing was originally constructed around 1600, rising to two storeys and attics. A narrower, two-bay, two-storey range dates back to around 1400 and was extended in the 18th century. The cross-wing has a thatched roof, while the rear wing primarily features plaintiled roofing, with a rear slope of pantiles. The farmhouse has chimneys of 19th-century red brick on both wings. Most of the windows are early 20th-century casements, some with leaded lights, and a diamond-mullioned window from around 1600 is exposed and fitted with glazing. A 19th-century timber-framed porch with a plaintiled roof incorporates a possible earlier core, and contains a pair of 20th-century glazed doors. The medieval section of the house showcases quality carpentry, including close-studding and a coupled-rafter roof with an open truss featuring a cambered arch-braced tie-beam; it was likely a narrow cross-wing (approximately 3 metres wide) originally attached to an open hall, which has since been demolished. The 1600 wing exhibits good plain carpentry, a lintelled open fireplace and a clasped-purlin roof.
