Description

Elder Cottage is a house dating from around 1550, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It originally had a two-cell end-chimney layout and is one storey high with attics. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring exposed studding with plaster infill. A corner post displays a raised date of 1619, although there is no evidence of work from that year in the house; it may relate to earlier replastering or changes to the windows that have since been removed. One gable shows some 18th-century herringbone pargetting. The roof is thatched and includes one eyebrow casement dormer. There is an axial chimney made of 19th-century red brick, along with 19th and 20th-century casement windows. The entrance door, which is boarded and from the 20th century, is located in a lean-to thatched porch. This cottage is an unusually small and narrow example of a heavily-framed 16th-century house, consisting of only a two-bay hall and a single small service room, with lofts above. Inside, there are massive unchamfered floor joists and a blocked diamond mullioned window under the eaves. A 17th-century lintelled open fireplace is present, with an additional 18th-century cell to the left, a 19th-century brick extension at the rear right, and a 20th-century extension to the far left.
