Description
Stow Lodge Hospital is a building constructed in 1781, originally serving as The Union Workhouse, referred to as a "House of Industry under the Gilbert Act" in White's Directory from 1855. The hospital is made of red brick and features a slated roof with a wooden eaves cornice that has modillions. It has two deep internal chimneys also made of red brick. The design follows an A:B:C:B:A pattern, with a central entrance block that has three windows and a modillioned pediment above. Inside the pediment, there is a painted wooden sundial surrounded by a cartouche.
On either side of the entrance block, there are set-back ranges with five windows each, and hipped terminal blocks with two windows. The building is three storeys high throughout. The windows are sash style with small panes, typically featuring flat arches made of gauged brick. The ground storey windows of Blocks A and B are set back within shallow round arches of gauged brick, supported by bands of painted stone. These windows are also round-arched, with glazing bars radiating into the head. The central block has tripartite sashes with cambered heads, while the two outer windows on the first storey have round-arched heads with brick keystones, along with small pane casements that include transoms and radiating mullions.
In the mid-20th century, the entrance was remodeled to create a porte-cochere connected to a single-storey office. At both ends of the building, there are original rear wings that are two storeys high and have four windows. There are also some 20th-century extensions to the side and rear that are not of special interest.
