Description
Abbots Hall is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The main range, which faces north, has a three-cell plan and features a lobby entrance that was added in the 17th century. The building is two storeys high and constructed with timber framing and plaster, showcasing some 18th-century herringbone pargetting in large panels. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central chimney made of red brick that dates from the 16th or 17th century. The windows are mid-19th-century casements.
A cross-wing was added to the right end of the house in the 17th century, and the mid-19th-century remodelling includes encasing this section in red brick, which is now painted, and features a pair of splayed bays. The entrance door has six panels and is sheltered by a gabled porch with plain tiles, which is supported by brackets and has trelliswork infilled spandrels. The plain 16th-century framing is mostly hidden, and the roof structure includes queen posts that are stout and well jowled but lack braces. The farmhouse is partially surrounded by a medieval moat that has been infilled in places.
