Description

Barley Green Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse located on Barley Green Road in Stradbroke, Laxfield. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring exposed studding on the front at the first-floor level and in the left gable. The roof is covered with black pantiles at the front and plaintiles at the rear. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-cell layout, originally designed with a cross-entry.

The farmhouse has mainly mid-20th century square-leaded casement windows, including one ground floor window with diamond mullions. In the left gable end, there are two original windows with moulded mullions and a boarded entrance door. Inside, there is a notable interior with much exposed framing. The hall and parlour feature roll-moulded bridging beams with leaf-carved stops and chamfered joists. In the hall, the mouldings extend onto the storey posts, while the parlour's storey posts have plain chamfers with barred stops. The service cell was originally divided into two rooms on the ground floor.

A doorway leading into the parlour chamber has a four-centre arched head. The chimney breast brickwork at the parlour end shows evidence of lining. The roof structure includes clasped purlins with long shallow braces to the collars that meet at the centre, along with cranked wind braces.
