Description

Number 12 (Robins Nest), Number 14, and Number 16 are a row of three estate cottages built in the late 19th century. They are designed in a rustic style and are the most ornate example of several cottages constructed by John Martineau Esq. of The Lawn. The cottages feature red brick on the ground floor and exposed timber-framing with render on the upper floor, topped with plaintiles.

The buildings are two storeys high and have a complex form. They include internal and end chimney-stacks with rounded shafts, moulded bases, and corbelled caps. The end cottages each have large jettied cross-wings, with shaped joist ends and ornate supporting brackets. The gables are adorned with carved bargeboards and ornate spike finials. There is a single-storey open timber porch at the angle of the wing and main range, along with an oriel window on the upper floor featuring a 5-light casement window.

All other windows in the row have similar casements with a single bar to the lights. The middle cottage is double fronted and features a large two-storey gabled porch that projects from its centre front. This porch has open timbering on the ground floor and a room above with a 5-light slightly coved window, along with matching bargeboards and finials. All three cottages have diagonal bracing in the apex of the gables and Biblical texts carved on the bressummers and tie-beams.
