Description

Priors Close is a house with a core dating back to the 16th century and mid-18th century extensions and facade. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered and topped with plain tiles. The building has two storeys and attics, with two plain red brick chimney stacks located externally on the end walls. A wood modillion cornice adds detail to the roofline.

The house has three gabled dormers, each with fluted bargeboards, spike finials, and two-light casement windows that contain old square-leaded panes. There are five windows on the first floor and four deeper windows on the ground floor, all of which are two-light casements with square-leaded panes. Centrally located Edwardian half-glazed double doors lead to an open veranda with a glazed roof that spans the entire front of the ground floor.

Inside, three bays of 16th-century framing are preserved. To the left of the central entrance, there is a truss featuring a chamfered main beam and posts, both with run-off stops, along with a heavy cambered tie-beam that has had its arched braces removed. Further left, another truss retains its arched braces. In the attic, there is a noticeable change in floor levels. The ends of the house were extended to achieve its current symmetrical Georgian appearance, and all roof timbers are covered. Additionally, there is a timber-framed wing of indeterminate date at the rear.
