Description

Poplar Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century, with later additions made to the rear and an early to mid-19th century facade. A wing that was attached to the right was demolished in 1959. The building is timber framed, with the facade and left gable end covered in white brick and pilasters at the corners. The rest of the structure is plastered, and the roof is made of concrete plain tiles. It is designed in a two-cell, lobby entry style, with two storeys and an attic.

The facade features two windows with 16-paned sashes set under gauged brick arches. There is a gabled porch from the 19th century that matches the facade, which has scalloped bargeboards and a semi-circular arch with a mid-20th century semi-glazed door. Inside the porch is an 18th-century door with six raised fielded panels. The house has two gabled three-light dormers, one of which on the left has an original lintel dated 1634. The chimney stack is almost centrally located and has a plain 19th-century shaft.

To the right, there is a garage addition also faced in white brick, with a clay plain-tiled roof and one 16-paned non-opening window. The rear wing is one and a half storeys high and features a gable end window with old square-leaded glass. The interior has been Victorianized, concealing most of the original structure. An early 19th-century stair has been tunnelled through the stack and features stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The roof structure includes butt purlins.
