Description
Ostler's Lodge is a house that was built in the mid or late 16th century as a stable range attached to the rear of the King's Head Inn, now known as Nos. 60 and 62 High Street. The building underwent major alterations around 1980. It is two storeys high and has five bays. The structure is timber-framed, with the framing exposed towards the yard and plastered infill panels. It features a concrete tiled roof and 20th-century casements along with a boarded and battened entrance door. Inside, there is good unmoulded framing, including arch-braced studwork and diamond-mullioned windows, some of which are quite complete but blocked. The building also has a notable queen-post roof, which is unusual for Mid Suffolk, featuring arch-braced cambered tie-beams, square-sectioned queen-posts and collars, with clasped purlins located above the collars. Additionally, the building was extended towards the rear around 1980.
