Description

A baker’s shop, hairdresser’s shop, and adjoining dwellings with rear extensions, built in the late 16th century and used as The King’s Head Inn by the 18th century; it may have been purpose-built as an inn. The building is two storeys and has attics, with six windows facing the street. It is timber-framed with roughcast rendering; the upper floor is jettied outwards. A date cartouche bearing "1716" is present, encased in a circular design within a square frame, though this is thought to be a 20th-century replacement of the original. The roof is covered in plain tiles and has flat-headed dormers. The dormers above No. 60 contain 19th-century sash windows, while those above No. 62 have casement windows. No. 60 has mid-19th century large-pane sash windows, a matching shop window, and a panelled entrance door with a glazed upper panel. No. 62 features windows dating from the 18th century, likely around 1716 as stated in the cartouche, with slender wooden mullions and transoms in arrangements of six and eight lights, fitted with wrought iron casements. A 19th or 20th century splayed shop window and a glazed three-panelled door serve the hairdressers shop. The main entrance to No. 62 has a 20th-century two-panelled door with steps and a pair of wrought iron handrails supported by twisted posts. At the centre rear of the property, an original gabled staircase wing preserves a fine late 16th-century staircase with turned heavy balusters and newel finials.
