Description

87 and 89 High Street is a shop and shop with a post office, along with dwellings above, built in 1772, as indicated on a tablet. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick, with the front elevation pebble-dashed in the 20th century. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features a sawtooth cornice of brick beneath the eaves. The building is two storeys high with five windows.

No. 87 has 20th-century casement windows on the first storey and a bay shop window. No. 89 retains two original casement windows on the first storey and has 19th-century windows, including a flat-roofed bay, below. Both shops have 20th-century glazed panelled doors. Between the two shops, there is a round-arched gateway that provides access from the street to the Quaker Meeting House located behind. This gateway features a pair of original gates, each with a single panel below and seven spear-headed bars above a middle rail, curving upwards towards the centre. At the rear of the passageway, the archway is constructed with gauged voussoirs and a limestone keystone that has the incised date of 1772. Additionally, there is a small 18th-century timber-framed and plastered wing behind No. 89. Inside No. 87, there is one of a pair of 15th-century oak doorways with a four-centred arched head, which has been removed from another house.
