Description

Chessil Holt is a house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, topped with plaintiled roofs. The building is 1½ storeys high and features a 2-cell main range with a lobby entrance, along with a rear wing added in the 18th century. There is a 19th-century single-storey extension at the front that was formerly used as the village post office. This extension is rendered and has comb pargetting, with a hipped lean-to roof covered in plaintiles. It includes one 12-pane sash window, one fixed 6-pane window, and a central entrance door with six fielded panels.

The main range has an internal chimney stack made of Tudor brick, featuring four attached diagonally-set square shafts on a rectangular base. There are two gabled dormers with plain bargeboards, plastered cheeks, and 2-light casement windows that have a single bar across the lights. Additionally, there is one 3-light casement window on the ground floor with two horizontal bars across the lights. The interior is plain, with much of the framing covered. One tie-beam has been cut through, while another shows a marked camber and straight supporting braces. The stack has two upper fireplaces, one of which features a segmental brick arch. The rear wing displays primary braces and bisected studs, although the roof has not been examined.
