Description
No. 4 Croft Cottages is a cottage that is part of a former row of three, dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It has a timber-framed structure that is rendered and topped with a thatched roof. On the right side, there is a brick lean-to addition that contains the entrance door, along with another lean-to at the rear. The cottage is two storeys high and features two 2-light old casement windows on the upper floor, and one 3-light and one 2-light window on the ground floor. The entrance is through a 20th-century plank door, and there is an external chimney stack made of 18th or 19th-century brick on the left side wall. The building is oriented sideways, with a wide gable end facing the street. It appears to have originally been a barn, which has been shortened, and the rear end wall had an open truss with long arched braces to the tie beam. The ceilings and partitions were added in the late 18th or early 19th century, featuring joists set on edge, and the roof has side purlins and a ridge that has been much repaired. The cottage is included for its group value.
