Description
The Town Hall in Eye was built in 1857 by E.B. Lamb. It is constructed from banded red and gault brick, featuring flint detailing with diamond and half-diamond lozenges arranged randomly across the entire wall surface. The building has slate and lead roofs and an irregular plan, standing two storeys tall. The west face showcases five tall round-headed casements with glazing bars, complemented by a moulded brick and York stone parapet and an elevated hipped roof. Both the north and south returns have one similar casement each, topped with a pediment over the parapet. The east side features a recessed entrance that leads into a two-stage tower, which has clock faces on all four sides and an open lantern on a domed lead roof. Inside, the ground floor assembly room is supported by a roof of arched braces and king post trusses. A stone staircase leads to the council chamber on the first floor, which has a raised rectangular roof light. The Town Hall is noted for its finely detailed and eccentric design, making excellent use of the irregular site and prominently dominating the centre of Eye.
