Description
Red House is a building that has been converted into two houses, originally serving as a house and surgery. The rear wing, which is timber-framed and plastered, dates back to around 1600, while the front range facing the street is made of red brick from the early 19th century. The front has a composition roof, and the rear wing features a roof covered with black-glazed pantiles.
The exterior consists of two storeys, reduced from three in the mid-20th century, with an eight-window range. In the sixth bay from the left, there is a six-panelled and fielded door set within a plain timber doorcase topped with a hood on brackets. This door is accessed by a double flight of steps with cast-iron railings. The window immediately to the right of the door on both floors is blind, featuring painted glazing bars. The remaining windows are 6/6 unhorned sashes under flat skewback arches made of herringbone gault brick. The flat roof has two truncated stacks.
Attached to the south gable is a single-storey extension from the late 19th century, known as No.1B, which was formerly the surgery. This extension is lit by three 2/2 horned sashes and has a 4-panelled door accessed by steps with cast-iron railings. The gabled two-storey rear wing contains a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements and has an internal gable-end stack to the west.
Inside, there is a wide entrance hall featuring boxed bridging beams. The room to the north has large-framed 19th-century dado panelling, while the south room includes a 20th-century fireplace supported by fluted Ionic columns. The staircase has stick balusters and a ramped handrail. The rear wing has a clasped purlin roof. Note that No.1A, which was formerly stables, is not included in this listing.
