Description

Gatehouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with a 17th-century service addition at the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The building was restored between 1975 and 1985. It features a timber frame, primarily plastered, with exposed close studding on the left gable and colourwashed brick on the right gable end. The roofs are mostly pantiled, except for the front slope of the main range, which is plaintiled. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a three-cell form, and includes three mid-20th century large-paned casement windows.

The entrance is a lobby with a mid-20th century boarded and battened door. At the rear, there are three large original windows with fine roll-moulded mullions, which are in unusually good condition; other similar windows are blocked but visible from the inside. A smaller first-floor window features cavetto mullions. Inside, there is an internal stack with an original plain shaft. The two-storey rear wing has some slatted windows and an internal stack. Both the hall and parlour boast fine ceilings with multiple roll mouldings on the bridging beams and joists. The service end, originally divided into two, also has moulded joists, though these are concealed. The rear wall contains part of an arched doorway leading into the cross-passage. In the parlour, there is a small blocked external doorway with a four-centre arched head, the purpose of which is unclear. Some exposed studding is visible, mainly in the later wing. There are newel stairs in both wings. The roof over the main range features clasped and butt purlins with arched wind-bracing.
