Description

Hoxne Watermill is a watermill dated 1846. The building features a white brick ground floor, with a timber-framed and weatherboarded upper section; the boarding is painted white on the west and south sides, while it is tarred on the other two sides. It has a slated roof and stands three storeys high with a loft, arranged in a rectangular plan of three by three bays. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, segmental arched on the ground floor and three-quarter height on the second floor.

On the west side, there is a central boarded half-door beneath a four-centred brick arch, along with a loading door at the first floor. The south gable end features a boarded door and two blind doorways, all under four-centred arches, as well as a boarded loading door on the first floor. Additionally, there is a gabled lucam with drop finials on the south side, supported by curved wooden brackets.

At the rear, there is a contemporary red brick steam mill, which has been reduced in height, but retains an intact tall tapering square chimney with a corbelled cap. The machinery inside, including an iron undershot waterwheel, is still intact. A datestone located on the northwest corner is inscribed with 'PRIMUS LAPIS HUJUS MOLAE AQUATILIS POSTUS EST 29 DIE AUGUS MDCCCXLVI LIEUT GENL SIR E KERRISON BART MP'.
